According to the National Environment Agency (NEA), all
models of domestic air conditioners and refrigerators sold in Singapore must be affixed with
energy efficiency labels before they can be sold to the public. After the
Mandatory Energy Labeling Scheme has come into force on January 1st, 2008, 369
air conditioner models and 278 refrigerator models have been registered.
This latest scheme is a
follow up to the existing voluntary energy labelling programme introduced in
2002. Since then, several improvements have been made to the label design and
rating system to enable consumers to better identify models that are energy
efficient. Speaking on NEAs latest energy efficiency initiative, the agency's
Director- General of Environmental Protection Mr. Joseph Hui said: The scheme
will not only help consumers make informed choices when buying these appliances,
but also allow them to play a direct role in cutting carbon emissions which
effect climate change.
Half to
two-thirds of the energy consumption of a typical household in Singapore goes
to operating air-conditioners and refrigerators. With mandatory labelling,
consumers will be able to select energy efficient models and hence use less
electricity, thereby reducing their utility bills, added Mr. Hui. Manufacturers and retailers who sell these electric appliances without
energy labels will be fined as high as RMB 2000, reveals JARN magazine. |
