Fläkt Woods has won a highly
unusual contract at the new Dubai
International Airport.
According to the companys press release, it will be supplying large axial fans
to precisely force intake air into large underground air handling units that
are delivering the air conditioning to the new concourse 3.
With summer temperatures
regularly in the mid 40s, the engineers on the project specified Fläkt Woods
Axicent large aerofoil fans. These fans are capable of accurately pushing air into
the below ground intake ducts of the air handling units to ensure they work
effectively to cool the new concourse areas. As an addition to their standard
JM Aerofoil fans, Fläkt Woods has developed a range of large JM Aerofoil fans,
known as Axicent, to provide higher pressures and volumes. These
unidirectional, standard temperature fans have been fitted with guide vanes to
force air at pressures of up to 4000 Pa. Fläkt Woods was selected because of
the total reliability of their fans, required to ensure fresh air is delivered
24/7 into the terminal. The fans have diameters ranging up to 2.6 metres, all have IP
55 motor protection and are designed for low energy consumption with low
lifetime costing.
The third concourse is part of on-going expansion at the airport. The programme will accommodate the increased number
of passengers at Dubai Airport from the new A380 Super Jumbo. Dubai airport will be one of the
first airports to have regular visits from the first A380s in service. Concourse 3 will incorporate climate-controlled
lounges. It will have 27 contact gates, of which 12 will be for the A380. The
two concourses will be connected via electric buses.
