| zeolite | group of aluminosilicates
containing very loosely held cations, used in molecular sieves and ion
exchangers |

| zeotrope |
nonazeotropic liquid
mixture that may be separated by distillation, and in which the components are
miscible in all proportions (homogeneous zeotrope); or not miscible in all proportions
(heterogeneous zeotrope). |

| zero principle |
if two systems are
both in thermal equilibrium with a third one, they are in mutual thermal
equilibrium (this principle is an introduction to the temperature concept). |

| zone (control zone) |
space or group of
spaces within a building with heating or cooling requirements sufficiently
similar that comfort conditions can be maintained by a single controlling
device. |

| zoning |
1. division of a building or group of buildings
into separately controlled spaces (zones), where different conditions can be
maintained simultaneously.
2. practice of dividing a building into smaller
sections for control of heating and cooling. Each section is selected so that
one thermostat can be used to determine its requirements. |
