calorie	heat required to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water 1°C; specifically from 4 to 5°C. The Fifth International Conference on the Properties of Steam (1956) defined the International Table calorie as 4.1868 J. Mean calorie = 1/100 part of the heat required to raise 1 gram of water from 0 to 100^°C. Great calorie or kilocalorie = 1000 calories.
