1. maximum load for which a machine, apparatus, device, or system is designed or con­structed.

2. measure of the maxi­mum amount of energy or material that may be stored in a given system. See also nameplate rating; air-conditioner capacity; instanta­neous capacity; integrated thermal storage capacity
