demand-limit tripping (electric)

1. process of, or equip­ment for, automatically opening an electric-service disconnect device

2. removing interruptible or deferrable load(s) at the user level when electric power or current flow to that user, or to a portion of the load, exceeds a specified level for more than a specified time, as deter­mined by agreement. The automatic function can be enabled or disabled remotely by the serving utility via central­ized communication.
