Indias
cold storage capacity has increased by nearly 11% to about 2.17 million tonnes
in the last two years. The total capacity in cold stores was 1.95 million
tonnes by the end of 2004. At present, there are 5,000 cold storage facilities
in the country, mostly dedicated to meat, dairy, potatoes and frozen foods. The
Indian government seems committed to improving the food supply chain. According to Cold Store Design, it is planning to provide financial
assistance and more favorable legislation (cheaper credit and tax breaks) for
those setting up cold chain facilities. It also has plans to invest 380
million dollars in mega food parks and is said to have reserved $1.2 billion
for the cold chain sector.
