Thursday, 01 February 2007
chileIn Chile, the manager of the Program Energy Efficiency Country (PPEE - "Programa País Eficiencia Energética"), Nicola Borregaard, proposed recently the initiative "Summer without necktie". The aim of this initiative is to reduce the use of air conditioners in public and private companies in order to increase energy savings, reports "El Aire Acondicionado.com".

"We recommend that every men, who work in the public and private sectors, should leave their jackets and neckties at home to avoid the excessive use of air conditioners during the Summer. We hope that every sector related with a working activity follows this example, so it could become an habit of all Chilean people", explained PPEE's manager.
The Minister of Economy, Ana María Correa, announced that some instructions to apply this criterion were distributed, including the recommendations delivered by the Program Energy Efficiency Country. Ana María Correa added that putting off the jacket and necktie doesn't mean informality in the workers' way of dressing.

According to PPEE's calculations, the country could save 17,2 to 34,4 GWh if every 215000 air conditioners, which the country imported between 1997 and 2006, were turned off for two hours per day during 40 days of use.
