HVAC project decision 2 Years, 3 Months ago Karma: 1
Hello,

I have to make a decision regarding a new project, and maybe i could use a third party opinion:

Current system is a 4 ton Fraser Johnston (Westinghouse) unit that is getting tired. The house is 2 story, with lots of vaulted ceilings, and we are planning on zoning the new system with 3 zones. I have talked to 4 contractors and received the suggestions below.
I'd appreciate any feedback on these units. I'm confident on the contractors, though contractor D spent quite a bit of time measuring the room sizes and current duct and register sizing. He gave the most complete report, by far. System reliability is a big importance here, will most likely purchase a labor warranty. The manufacturers are Trane, Coleman, Lennox, Goodman, Carrier, and York.

Thanks in advance,

Contractor A:

System A-1: (18 seer, 9.0 HSPF)
Trane XL20 two stage heat pump, Trane variable speed air handler with 20 KW strip heaters, Trane

902 comm. T-stat, Trane clean effects air cleaner, Honeywell wireless zoning system, etc.

System A-2: (18 seer, 9.8 HSPF)
Coleman Echelon 8T 18seer 2 stage heat pump, Coleman variable speed air handler and 20KW strip kit, Honeywell Prestige HD Thermostat, Honeywell wireless zoning system etc.

Contractor B:

Note: Contractor B uses the Honeywell Harmony III zoning system.

System B-1: (16.9 seer, 8.65 HSPF)
Lennox XP-19-048 Four ton/two stage heat pump, Lennox CBX32MV-068 variable speed 5 ton blower coil with 5 ton evaporator coil (wants extra air flow if needed for a long run on system) Lennox

ECBH29EH-20KW heating strips, Lennox cofort sense 5000 pgm. T-stat.

System B-2: (14.0 seer, 8.75 HSPF)
Lennox XP-14-048 Four ton/single stage heat pump, Lennox CBX32MV-060 variable speed 5 ton blower coil with 5 ton evaporator coil (wants extra air flow if needed for a long run on system) Lennox

ECBH29EH-20KW heating strips, Lennox cofort sense 5000 pgm. T-stat.

System B-3: (15.5 seer, 9.00 HSPF)
Goodman SSZ16048 Four ton/two stage heat pump, Goodman AEPF4260 blower coild with a variable speed blower and 5 ton evap. coil, Goodman HKR-20 20KW heat strips. Hwell tstat.

System B-4: (15 seer, 8.75 HSPF)
Goodman SSZ14048 Four ton/single stage heat pump, Goodman AEPF4260 blower coild with a variable speed blower and 5 ton evap. coil, Goodman HKR-20 20KW heat strips. Hwell tstat.

Contractor C: (offered only 1 system)

Carrier 25HPA542H003 3.5 ton Heat Pump (15 seer, 9 HSPF),
Carrier FV4BNF005000 fan coil 15 KW strip heater. Contractor C uses an Infinity Zoning system and is about 1500 more expensive for just that option. Also, I am wondering if the 3.5 ton unit is a bit small.

Contractor D:

Note: Conctractor D uses Arzel zoning system

System D1: (17 seer, 10 HSPF)
York YZH04811 Affinity 8T 2 stage 4 ton heat pump, CC48D4G245L043 Aspen 4 ton indoor coil,

MV20DN21 Affinity 4 ton air handler EB-STAT-01 smart T-stat

System D2: (15.5 seer, 9.3 HSPF)
York YZE04811 Affinity 5T 2 stage 4 ton heat pump, CC60D4G245L043 Aspen 4 ton indoor coil,

MV20DN21 Affinity 4 ton air handler EB-STAT-01 smart T-stat

System D3: (15 seer, 9.35 HSPF)
York YHUF48S41S1 LX single stage 4 ton heat pump, CC48D4G245L043 Aspen 4 ton indoor coil,

MV20DN21 Affinity 4 ton air handler York VisionPRO 8000 Touchscreen T-stat

I would choose option D1....very efficient system and it sounds like your contractor did his homework.

The Affinity is a nice system with a great HSPF, you will enjoy the comfort.

I agree. I would go with option D1. I have used that system before and loved it. It's very efficient and dependable. I also like that the contractor seems to be on top of things. I would anticipate that you would be satisfied with his work by the sound it.
