The SkillFRIDGE 2008 refrigeration
and air conditioning competition, which took place at Birmingham
College this month, was organised by
SummitSkills and supported by the Institute
of Refrigeration, the Air
Conditioning and Refrigeration Industry Board and the British Refrigeration
Association. SkillFRIDGE is part of SkillM&E, three skills competitions
that also include SkillPLUMB and SkillELECTRIC seeking the finest mechanical
and electrical engineers in the building services engineering sector.
Over a challenging three days in strictly monitored conditions,
candidates underwent a series of practical tests designed to test their skills
and abilities to international competition standard as they completed design,
installation and commissioning work based on real-life situations. Following a
closely judged contest, Martin Davey, a student from South Eastern
Regional College
was crowned UK SkillFRIDGE champion 2008, reveals the organizers press release.
The best competitors from the UK
final have the chance to compete alongside other team-mates at WorldSkills, the
largest skills competition in the world, attracting contestants from more than
50 countries. Martin, who works for Chiltec Refrigeration, said of his win:
Im over the moon. I was very nervous waiting to hear the announcement
but its great to have won. I now hope to compete at an international level,
which would be a really good opportunity. The
silver award was won by Jason Smith from Grenco Refrigeration, whilst Richard
May from Cool Solution Ref & A/C Ltd took home bronze.
