Carrier introduces dual-temperature container refrigeration unit PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 23 January 2007
Carrier Transicold, a business unit of United Technologies Corp., introduced the ThinLINE DT container refrigeration system, the only system on the market to offer a dual-temperature capability, reveals a press release from the company. The unit was unveiled at Intermodal Transport and Logistics 2006, the world’s largest container show, which took place in Hamburg from December 5-7.

carrierThe ThinLINE DT system provides the unique ability to split a container into two variable-sized compartments, each with different temperature requirements. It can alternately cool one compartment and freeze another. Or, if refrigerating one compartment and heating the other is needed, it can do that, too.

The benefits are better container utilization and lower shipping costs. Instead of shipping two partial loads requiring different temperatures in separate containers, they can be shipped within a single 40-foot-high cube (HC) container. For added utility, the container can even be operated as a single-compartment unit, as needed.
“It is perhaps the most versatile container refrigeration system ever developed by Carrier,” said Scott Pallotta, director of marketing, Carrier Transicold. “It addresses the fact that one size does not fit all needs.”

The ThinLINE DT host unit is nearly identical to Carrier’s ThinLINE NT unit, the industry standard for performance and reliability. The host unit’s evaporator can freeze, refrigerate or heat/defrost the front compartment. Refrigerating and heating/defrosting of the rear compartment is achieved with an aft evaporator that is mounted from the ceiling and protected by a steel cage.
An insulated moveable bulkhead partitions the container into two sections. The bulkhead slides along a track and adjusts six feet from center in either direction. This means the compartment can be divided into two 20-foot compartments or into two compartments of variable size up to a 14-foot/26-foot combination.

The bulkhead, hinged at the top, swings up for single-compartment operation, allowing the container to serve as a standard 40-foot HC unit.
Included in the assembly are condensate drain lines and refrigerant lines for the remote evaporator, and a wiring harness sheltered in a recessed channel in the container ceiling. The system employs Carrier’s industry-leading MicroLink 3 controller, featuring digital displays that toggle between readings for the front and rear so operators can program and monitor both compartments from a single control.
The front compartment delivers the standard frozen/perishable setpoint range of -30oC to 30oC (-22oF to 86oF) when dual-temp mode is not activated. The range is from -30oC to -1oC (‑22oF to 30oF) when operating in dual-temp mode. The rear compartment offers a perishable-only range of -2oC to 21oC (28oF to 70oF).

The DT unit is designed for applications where less than full 40-foot containers or two 20-foot containers are being used.
