Papers are invited for a Symposium on Airliner Cabin Environment: Recent Progress in Characterization and Improvement sponsored by ASTM Committee D22 on Air Quality and its Subcommittee D22.05 on Indoor Air. The symposium will be held April 10–11, 2008, in Anaheim, Calif., in conjunction with the April 7–9, 2008, standards development meetings of Committee D22, informs a press release from ASTM International, one of the largest voluntary standards development organizations in the world.
 The purpose of this symposium is to provide a forum for presentation and discussion of new information about the aircraft cabin environment and its effects on passengers and crew members. The aircraft cabin is a challenging environment for maintaining the health, comfort, and well-being of occupants. Space is limited, conditions can feel cramped, the outside environment is extreme, and travelers experience anxiety over loss of control of their situation and environment. During flight, the passengers and crew can experience noise, reduced atmospheric pressure, vibration, low relative humidity, variable temperature, and potential air quality degradation. It is perhaps not surprising that complaints have been registered for decades about the aircraft cabin environment. Concern over the impact of the cabin environment on the traveling public and flight crews led to National Research Council (NRC) studies reported in 1986 and 2002, and to major research efforts in the United States and Europe. This symposium will assist in the dissemination of results from these recent studies.
To participate in the symposium, presenters/authors must submit the online Abstract Submittal Form http://www.astm.org/MEETINGS/COMMIT/d22symp0507.html, and attach a 250-300 word preliminary abstract by May 31, 2007. |
