U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
Administrator Lisa P. Jackson, U.S.
Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood and U.S. Secretary of Housing and
Urban Development Shaun Donovan recently announced an interagency Partnership
for Sustainable Communities to help improve access to affordable housing, more
transportation options, and lower transportation costs while protecting the
environment in communities nationwide and helping to address the challenges of
climate change.
The Partnership for
Sustainable Communities established six guiding liveability principles, such as more
transportation choices; promote equitable, affordable housing; enhance the
economic competitiveness; support to existing communities; coordinate policies
and leverage investment; and value communities and neighbourhoods. These six
principles will act as a foundation
for interagency coordination and will be vital to coordinate federal transportation,
environmental protection, and housing investments at the respective agencies.
DOT
Secretary LaHood said, Creating liveable
communities will result in improved quality of life for all Americans and will
help Americas
neighbourhoods become safer, healthier and more vibrant. For the first time, the
Federal government will speak with one voice on housing, environmental and
transportation policy, said HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan. Were leading the way towards communities that are cleaner,
healthier, more affordable, and great destinations for businesses and jobs, added
EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson.
