SIRAC defends adsorption refrigeration on the reduction of the environmental impact PDF Print E-mail

seedThe SIRAC network meeting at the University of Warwick, Centre for Sustainable Energy Engineering and Design held on 13th May 2009, reviewed some innovative applications in adsorption technology, a heat driven cooling process which uses an adsorption medium such as activated carbon together with a secondary refrigerant to achieve a cooling effect.

According to SIRAC, adsorption has many potential applications in refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pumps. The Head of the Centre, and leading researcher in this area, Prof Bob Critoph explained the advantages of the adsorption refrigeration, since it uses a chemical rather than a mechanical compressor and is driven by heat rather than mechanical work.

Presentations and demonstrations at Warwick included domestic gas fired heat pumps and solar or biomass powered refrigeration and air conditioning. These prototypes are in development for a number of applications and field trials are taking place.
