In Chillventa 2010, DuPont announced the development of a new refrigerant with a reduced global warming potential (GWP), suitable for use in commercial refrigeration systems. DuPont Opteon XP10 is based on HFO-1234yf, which has recently received global acceptance for use in automobile air conditioning.
DuPont Opteon XP10 is characterized by its low GWP (near 600) when compared to R134a, and by its similarity to the R134a in its thermodynamic properties. The initial test results indicate that it is suitable for use as alternative refrigerant for new commercial refrigeration systems of medium temperature, based on technology R134a or as a substitute of R134a for existing systems. Also, the first pilot projects with major food retailers, such as ALDI Süd and Penny (both in Germany) and Spar (Austria), have very encouraging results in terms of functionality and ease of use.
DuPont is considering carrying out a limited initial commercial launch of Opteon XP10 to the European Union between 2012 and 2013, and analyze the market response to define the exact strategy for commercial introduction.
