Eimskip recently opened the
largest cold store in China
in the presence of Mr. Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, president of Iceland, and 350 other Icelandic
people. The first phase of the cold store, with a capacity of 55.000 tons, was
opened in a pomp ceremony, while the second facility with the same capacity is
on the drawing board.
Being the first cold storage built in the port
of Qingdao, Chinas largest port in terms of
transport of temperature controlled cargo, the location of the cold store has a
distinct advantage for customers. Located in only about 100 meter distance from
the port, it is thus the most optimal choice in terms of temperature controlled
cargo storage. Eimskip is a key international player in transportation and
storage of temperature controlled cargo and Qingdao Port
believes that many opportunities will arise with the establishment of the new
cold storage. According to the companys press release, Eimskips integrated
shipping and transport network will undoubtedly reinforce Qingdaos
potential to become the largest port for frozen and chilled seafood in Asia.
Baldur Gudnason, CEO of Eimskip, said This is a very exciting project,
which supports the current operations of Eimkip China. We have established 4
offices in the country in recent years and currently around 100 people work for
Eimskip in China.
The cold store project started with the visit of Mr. Olafur Ragnar Grimsson to Qingdao in 2005 and is
now concluding successfully. During the process, we have also received
invaluable support from the embassador of Iceland
in China, Mr. Gunnar Snorri
Gunnarsson and his personnel at the Icelandic embassy in China.
